Airfoil/wings

Airfoil is another name for a wing. Look at the picture of the race car in Figure 12-8. Why is an airfoil (wing) mounted on the rear section of this race car Is the airfoil producing lift or is it producing a downward force ... 

Airfoil Wing-shaped blades used in compressors and turbines to interact with gas stream. 

This phenomenon is caused by self-excitation of the blade and is aero-elastic. It must be distinguished from classic flutter, since classic flutter is a coupled torsional-flexural vibration that occurs when the freestream velocity over a wing or airfoil section reaches a certain critical velocity. Stall flutter, on the other hand, is a phenomenon that occurs due to the stalling of the flow around a blade. 

A propeller is an airfoil mounted on a revolving shaft its wing-shaped design moves air as it moves. The propeller creates a low pressure area in front of the propeller, thereby moving the aircraft forward because of the high pressure area behind the propeller.

Airfoil Structure, such as a wing or a propeller, designed to interact, in motion, with the surrounding airflow in a manner that optimizes the desired reaction, whether that be to minimize air resistance or to maximize lift. 

The Wright brothers are rightfully called the first aeronautical engineers because of the testing they did in their wind tunnel. By using balances to test a variety of different airfoil shapes, they were able to correctly predict the lift and drag of different wing shapes. This work enabled them to fly successfully at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17, 1903.
