Airborne Activity Confinement System

The ventilation system section is comprised of seven subsystems airborne activity confinement system (AACS), central control room habitability (CCRH), Assembly Area ventilation (AAV) system, Disassc ty Area ventilation (DAV) stem. Purification Area ventilation (PAV) system. Building 108-K ventilation (V108) system, and nuscellaneous ventilation tystem.

The Savannah River Site (SRS) reactors are designed with an airborne activity confinement system (AACS) rather than a containment system. The AACS is an active ventilation system that continuously exhausts air from prescribed zones in the reactor building through a set of filters in order to prevent unattenuated release of contaminated air to the environment under accident conditions. The system is designed such that air flows from areas of least expected radioactive contamination to areas of higher potential for radioactive contamination. This is achieved by maintaining the process areas at negative pressures by the operation of fans and dampers.

The purpose of the contaminated water removal and disposal system (CWRDS), i.e., the sump water removal system, is to remove and retain the emergency coolant or cooling water following a design basis loss of coolant accident (LOCA) or seismic event. This system operates in conjunction with the Airborne Activity Confinement System (AACS) to control the release of liquid and airborne contaminants. 

Historically, for the SRS reactors, a DBA core damage fraction of 1 percent has been associated with the LBLOCA, which is consistent with the capability of the airborne activity confinement system.
