Air purification and recovery

One of the more promising potentials for growth activated carbon exists in the now well-established use of the gas mask principle for purifying air.1,7 8 9,10 

The open window has long been the symbol of wholesome indoor living quarters—and until recently it was the general belief that enclosed spaces require a continuous supply of outside air to maintain the oxygen at a proper level. Research has disclosed, however, that 

The staleness so often observed in unventilated enclosed spaces is caused by foreign vapors that arise from the metabolism of the occupants, cooking, smoking, cleansing agents, and insecticides. And in industrial sections, manufacturing operations contribute their quota of other contamination. 

The open window in January and other midwinter months is no longer needed. By utilizing the principle of the gas mask, it is now practicable to remove all contamination and thereby restore complete freshness to indoor air, which can then be reused for full ventilation. The potential is made manifest by the successful operation of the atomic submarine.11 

Long-established notions seldom change completely overnight, and we find many that still believe there is no adequate substitute for outside air.12
