Some plant-infecting bacteria secrete plasmids which induce plants to manufacture opines, substances which help the bacterium flourish in the plant. For example. Agrobacterium tumefaciens, which induces tumours in dicotyledons, injects circular DNA programmed to make agropine, which is the l,2 -lactone of A -T-deoxymannitol-r-ylglutamine (Tate et al., 1982).
