Afghanistan war

The Soviet Union probably used mustard (and nerve gas) in Afghanistan. The Afghanistan war was considered the Soviet Union s Vietnam . The use of CWs was described by Sidell and Franz (1997). The use of CWs by Soviet forces was also significant and has been confirmed against unprotected subjects. Despite the use of CWs, the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghaiustan was reahzed at the beginning of 1989.

Much has been reported of late about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Much of the coverage of course relates to shaken survivors of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. And PTSD was a storyline in coverage of the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Transportation and communication are more difficult in mountains. Even today, mountain weather sometimes makes flying into mountains risky, and radio signals are blocked by the masses of stone. U.S. interstate highways close down due to snow, ice, and even rockfalls. The difficulty of operating in the mountainous countries of Afghanistan and Vietnam certainly affected the outcomes of the wars fought in those countries.
