Critical theory

In a chromatographic separation, the individual components of a mixture are moved apart in the column due to their different affinities for the stationary phase and, as their dispersion is contained by appropriate system design, the individual solutes can be eluted discretely and resolution is achieved. Chromatography theory has been developed over the last half century, but the two critical theories, the Plate Theory and the Rate Theory, were both well established by 1960. There have been many contributors to chromatography theory over the intervening years but, with the... [Pg.16]

Critical theories take into account concentration fluctuations and describe phase transitions near the critical point. The critical theory for this phase transition is the Ising model which also describes liquid-vapour transitions near their critical points. The prediction of the three-dimensional Ising model for the critical exponent /3 = 0.3 is in good agreement with experiments as shown in Fig. 5.3(b). Mean-field and cri-... [Pg.174]

The critical exponents y, v, and at were calculated to third-order in e independently by Brezin, Le Guillou, and Zinn-Justin, and by Nickel. The outcome was published jointly by these physicists in 1973.29 To obtain the result, Nickel used Wilson s original method conversely, Brezin, Le Guillou, and Zinn-Justin used another approach 30 they eliminated the cut-off by renormalization, and in order to calculate simpler integrals, they worked directly at the critical point the critical theory and the renormalization constants were then defined by introducing adequate renormalization conditions.2... [Pg.495]

This relation appears in the same form in the critical theory of liquid-gas transitions and in ferromagnetic transitions. It is very clear that the definitions of a, y, and v used here have been chosen ad hoc. [Pg.568]

To answer this need to understand social systems, from Critical Theory a new body of social theory has emerged such as that of the late Alberto Melucci who in his work on social movements sought to explore how individuals create meaning for their lives in a planetary society . Melucci combined poststructuralism with systems thinking. In this sense, systems are contextual, they are nested within other systems that interconnect to form networks but how the... [Pg.293]

We can similarly determine the leading correction to the susceptibility exponent 7. It is known that in two dimensional critical theory, a 3-leg vertex has a higher scaling dimension than a 1-leg vertex. This implies that at the critical point e = 0, the ratio C( )/> ( ) will tend to zero as a power of b, and hence C can be ignored in determining the leading correction. Then the value of the exponent 7 is determined by the value of Pu at the fixed point e = e (6). We can now write the scaling ansatz for this variable ... [Pg.169]
