In this work the state-of-the-art and perspectives of column characterization and compai ison have been presented and discussed. All information about physico-chemical properties of RP HPLC Cl8 and C8 columns as porosity, average surface area, free silanol concentration, binding ligand density and others, were summarized. The points of views about column classifications, its advantages and disadvantages were discussed. It was shown that Cl8 and C8 HPLC column classification processes do not allow selecting the column with the same or preai range selectivity.

In the 1980s, a new separations technique, capillary electrophoresis (CE), was developed. CE created great excitement and was initially expected to replace HPLC as the method of choice for ultratrace analyses. However, it became evident that CE was complementary to HPLC and filled a different niche in separations. Since each technique has advantages and disadvantages, it is important to understand the basic theory that underlies the separations in order to choose the right technique for a problem. 

It is sometimes necessary for a drugs chemist to make comparisons of heroin samples. While TLC, HPLC and GC (i.e. GC-MS) can all be employed for this purpose, there are advantages and disadvantages to each of these techniques. 

As for any other functional polymer, polymeric betaines are accessible by two different synthetic routes (1) the polymerization of zwitterionic monomers or (2) the zwitterionic functionalization of reactive precursor polymers. Both routes have inherent advantages and disadvantages. The polymerization of the zwitterionic monomers leads to polymers with 100% betaine functionality, but their molecular characterization is difficult for several reasons. For instance, the conformation of the polymers in aqueous solution is very sensitive, not only to the ionic strength but also to the type of added salt, and in the case of polycarbobetaines also to the pH. Furthermore, polymeric zwitterions often exhibit strong interactions with other matter, e.g., chromatographic colmnns. Hence, reliable GPC or HPLC measurements are very difficult to perform, if at all.
