PLACID/PLINT process [13,14], The PLACID process (see also Chapter 16) is based on the electrowinning of lead from a chloride solution in a cell where the cathode and anode are separated by a semipermeable membrane. Lead oxide and lead dioxide are converted to soluble lead chloride, whilst lead sulfate is converted in a hot brine circuit. The sulfate ion is removed as gypsum after the addition of lime. The FLINT process is an advanced adaptation of the PLACID process and operates in parallel with a pyrometallurgical route that smelts the metallic lead fractions from the battery. [Pg.503]

The statistical error of such sampling is proportional to 1 / /N. Therefore, the accuracy of the method increases with the sample size. More advanced adaptive Monte Carlo methods use, for instance, importance sampling to enhance the convergence and the accuracy over that of the basic Monte Carlo integration. [Pg.1399]

However, as stated in the introduction, the bulk of the aqueous reactions of interest involve proton transfer in some form. Even with advanced adaptive QM/MM methods it is still not trivial to perform simulations on proton transfer processes, due to their delocalized nature. Therefore, considering an example system in which proton transfer and diffusion occur can serve as a tough crash test for adaptive QM/MM, and should demonstrate the limitations of the methods. We specifically focus on diffusion and Grothuss shuttling, which are particularly non-local, and will affect thermodynamic reaction quantities. The impact of the introduction of an adaptive QM/MM boundary will be quantified through comparison with fully QM simulations on the same system. To underline the limits of the methodology, the behavior of the proton transfer events and their deviation from expectation will be thoroughly discussed. [Pg.78]

The ceUulose polymer and its conversion routes have already proved to be capable of adaptation to meet a wide range of market demands. The advances being made in getting ceUulose into solution with minimal environmental impact augur weU for the development of streamlined routes from tree to fiber or fabric. [Pg.354]

Hydroxyapatite (HA) coating on the surface of the hip stem and the acetabular cup is the most recent advancement in artificial hip joint implant technology. This substance is a form of calcium phosphate, which is sprayed onto the hip implant. It is a material found in combination with calcium carbonate in bone tissue, and bones can easily adapt to it. When bone tissue does grow into HA, the tissue then fixes the hip joint implant permanently in position. These HA coatings are only used in press-fit, noncemented implants. [Pg.188]

While the single-loop PID controller is satisfactoiy in many process apphcations, it does not perform well for processes with slow dynamics, time delays, frequent disturbances, or multivariable interactions. We discuss several advanced control methods hereafter that can be implemented via computer control, namely feedforward control, cascade control, time-delay compensation, selective and override control, adaptive control, fuzzy logic control, and statistical process control. [Pg.730]

Eor many problems, the ideal umbrella potential would be one that completely flattens the free energy profile along q, i.e., UXq) = W(q). Such a potential cannot be determined in advance. However, iterative approaches exist that are known as adaptive... [Pg.185]

Another factor when taking on new staff must be their attitude to a changing technology. Advances are being made in the many aspects of engineering and application in refrigeration and air-conditioning. This situation requires adaptable personnel who are always ready to assimilate new ideas. [Pg.350]

Progress in the theory and advances in practical applications of hydrogels are to a great extent determined by experimental study of their swelling and elasticity. However, investigating SAH is rather complicated because most of the available techniques are adapted mainly to highly crosslinked gels. [Pg.111]

The concept of the controlled chemical fireball is said to have significantly advanced the potential effectiveness of incendiary weapons. The development of adaptive optic (AO) systems to correct for wavefront distortions introduced by the atmosphere represents one of the major advances in astronomical telescope technology of the 20th century. However, in spite of the great progress in AO, sky coverage is limited to sources located near bright stars that provide a measure of wavefront distortions. [Pg.207]
