In the following, some of the most well-known adiabatic photoreaction mechanisms relevant to fluorescent probes are briefly introduced.

An approximation stating that the motion of nuclei in ordinary molecular vibrations is slow relative to the motions of electrons. Thus, the nuclei can be held in fixed positions when doing calculations of electronic states. Such an assumption is useful in determining potential energy surfaces and is central in studying the quantum mechanical properties of molecules. For DM ABN in polar solvents, the observed activation energy AB for the backward reaction is larger than BA, that is, the adiabatic photoreaction is exothermic. For example, from the spectra and activation energies shown in Figs. 2.1 and 2.8, the potential energy diagram displayed in Fig. 2.9 can be constructed. As can be seen in Table I, the BA values thus derived correlate with Ev for various series of homologous solvents. Experimentally, in all cases studied, intramolecular fluorescence quenching can be observed due to the adiabatic photoreaction towards the photochemical funnel (twisted double bond, close-lying So/Sj, ultrafast nonradiative... 

In adiabatic reactions, the chemical change occurs on the same energy hypersurface (see Sect. 1.2). Most adiabatic photoreactions are proton transfer reactions. All reactions of that sort are reversible insofar as, following deactivation, very fast reverse reactions drive the system back to its original composition so that no permanent change occurs [26b].
