Secondly, the rates and modes of reaction of the intermediates are dependent on their detailed structure. For example, the stability of the cation radical formed by the oxidation of tertiary aromatic amines is markedly dependent on the type and degree of substitution in the p-position (Adams, 1969b Nelson and Adams, 1968 Seo et al., 1966), and the rate of loss of halogen from the anion radical formed during the reduction of haloalkyl-nitrobenzenes is dependent on the size and position of alkyl substituent and the increase in the rate of this reaction may be correlated with the degree to which the nitro group is twisted out of the plane of the benzene ring (Danen et al., 1969).

I don t want this tremor, though. That joy—that hope—it s all to do with Mark, and it takes up too much of me. There s not enough left for Adam. It s as if my hold on Adam, on my love, is slipping. 

And now Mark, who I thought was long past, is present. He s here beside me and I ve known since he stood, silhouetted, against the midsummer light in the Chantry garden, that what I loved in Adam, I first learned to love in Mark. So where s Adam now ... 

I don t know. Mark, sitting across the car from me, his long legs stretched out and his hands at rest, seems impossibly, baf-flingly substantial. How dare he stand between me and Adam How dare he block my access to that easy love which I refuse to know can no longer be reciprocal, the love I m still sending into a void because not sending it is worse ... 

No, marriage does not always come down to polite formulae. What, then, is it that burns in my belly when I look at Mark The anger squirms again, only it s not at him, it s at me, at this flare of desire that blots out Adam and casts our love into darkness. 

Yes, please, I say, because to refuse is to say it matters, and I won t say that, even though my body s shouting it. Thank God Mark wasn t at my side. And if he had been, what would I have done What would I have wanted to do Adam, where are you ... 

Mark s watching me, and this time there s no mistaking what s in his gaze. I meet it, hold it, try to see through it to Adam, because otherwise Adam s lost to me. 

The breeze brushes over us and the leaves show their pale undersides like a wheeling flock of birds. Yes, I say, because I find I have. I ve forgiven Mark for leaving. And I ve forgiven him for not loving me. Only I m not going to say that, am I, because that s past, very past, long before Adam.
