A study assessing the risk factors for nephrotoxicity with aminoglycosides (tobramycin and gentamicin) enrolled 1489 patients, 157 of whom developed clinical nephrotoxicity. Of these patients 118 had no immediately identifiable cause (sueh as acute renal failure) and further evaluation of other risk factors found that the concurrent use of amphotericin B significantly increased the risk of nephrotoxicity. ... [Pg.286]

Three cases of acute renal failure have been tentatively attributed to the use of gentamicin with clindamycin, and another report identified the combination as a risk factor for nephrotoxicity. However, other reports note no increased nephrotoxicity when gentamicin or tobramycin was given with clindamycin. [Pg.287]

Acute renal failure has been reported in 3 patients with normal renal function when they were given gentamicin 3.9 to 4.9 mg/kg daily and clindamycin 0.9 to 1.8 mg/kg daily for 13 to 18 days. They recovered within 3 to 5 days of discontinuing the antibacterials but in one patient acute renal failure only developed after the clindamycin was stopped. The reasons for the renal failure are not known, but given the long courses of gen-... [Pg.287]

In Japan, tobramycin has been studied in many hospitals. Among the records of 236 patients there has been one case of acute renal failure, and 2 cases of temporarily increased urea in the blood (26 ). In a comparative study in Belgium of the clinical effectiveness of tobramycin and gentamicin, azotaemia developed in 1 patient out of 31 receiving tobramycin, and in 2 of the 31 patients treated with gentamicin. Both antibiotics showed the same degree of effectiveness (27 ). [Pg.210]
