The range of antibiotic that can be measured is usually 0.01 to 1.00 ug antibiotic/mL and has been used for gentamicin, carbenicillin, ticarcillin and amikacin (44-46). The use of the EMIT system, to-date, has been in the clinical area and unrelated to measuring residues of antibiotics. The procedure has potential for residue analysis if interferences by non-specific factors can be overcome.

Carbenicillin is relatively non-toxic and this allows huge doses to be administered without any serious side effects. Resistance develops quickly however, and for this reason it is often combined with gentamicin [75]. 

Carbenicillin. The inherent limitations of gentamicin and carbenicillin when used alone have led to their use in combination. In vitro studies have conclusively shown that synergism can occur [28,102,103], both in bacteriostatic and bactericidal tests [103]. Table 7.3 illustrates some of the findings to date. The in vitro findings have been extended to their in vivo use and combinations allow levels of both antibiotics to be reached safely and with successful outcome. 

Other agents. Gentamicin is partially synergistic with colistin and tetracycline [121] but no other combination has been found that compares favourably with the synergism achieved with carbenicillin.

Aminoglycoside antibiotics (257), including kanamycin A, tobramycin, and gentamicin C complex, have been acylated with 1 mole of disodium carbenicillin (258) to give monoacylated derivatives (e.g., 259) (compounds 257-259). The resulting compounds were devoid of antibacterial activity against several strains tested, however, and showed no toxicity [135].
