Acid precipitation economic effects

Scandinavian and European studies, including the Norwegian Interdisciplinary Research Programme Acid Precipitation—Effects on Forest and Fish, and the study by the European Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, elucidated the effects of acid rain on fish and forests and long-distance transport of pollutants in Europe. 

An international conference on the effects of acid precipitation was organized in Norway in 1976 with another planned for 1980. In April of 1979, 35 governments participating in the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe adopted a draft Convention on Transboundary Air Pollution. This Convention requires signatory states to do all in their powers to limit and reduce, as far as possible, air pollution. Thus, a first international cooperation to combat air pollution has begun. 

Any programme to reduce emissions of acid pollutants SO2 and NO to mitigate the effects of acid precipitation and of other associated photo-oxidant pollutants should be based on a consideration of the value of the likely benefits of various control strategies in relation to their costs. The political process will of course also determine priorities and the level of acceptable expenditure in relation to benefits realised. This is the economical filler par excellence, in ground, air floated and precipitated forms. It is used mainly as a diluent filler, although suitably treated precipitated types have a certain reinforcing effect. Because calcium carbonate is attacked by acids, even weak acids, its use should be avoided in compounds where the finished product could be in contact with these chemicals.
