Phenyl radical, side by side with methyl radical, carbon dioxide and methyl benzoate, was also stabilized in an inert matrix as a product of UV photolysis of acetyl(benzoyl)peroxide [112] (Pacansky and Brown, 1983). Of nine IR bands of the radical C6H5, intense absorption at 710 cmwhich was shifted to 519 cm for the deuterium-labelled radical C Ds, has been assigned to out-of-plane CH deformation. The bands of the phenyl radical... [Pg.33]

Figure 1. Nonexponential decay of methyl benzoyloxyl radical pairs in a single crystal of acetyl benzoyl peroxide after long photolysis at 77 K. The initial rapid decay has an effective rate constant of 1.1 min" while the later decay has an effective rate constant of 0.06 min -. Shorter photolysis gave clean exponential decay indicating a more uniform radical-pair structure (see Refs. 16b and 66). Figure 1. The decomposition of the unsymmetrical peroxides (Table 82) does not present anything particularly unusual in rates. The enthalpy of activation for the decomposition of benzoyl phenylacetyl peroxide and phenylacetyl peroxide are similar. An analysis of the products from the decomposition of acetyl benzoyl peroxide in conjunction with kinetic datahaveled Walling and Cekovic to suggest an induced decomposition which is initiated by methyl radical attack on the aromatic ring, viz. [Pg.505]

Properties White crystals. Decomposed by water, alkaloids, organic matter, and some organic solvents decomposes slowly and evaporates when gently heated, and instantaneously (possibly explosively) if quickly heated, ground, or compressed. Mp 36.6C bp 130C (19 mm). Moderately soluble in ether, chloroform, carbon teteachloride, and water slightly soluble in mineral oils and alcohol. The commercial product is mixed with a neutral drying powder and contains 50% acetyl benzoyl peroxide. [Pg.12]

The competitive oxidation of substituted benzaldehydes in acetic anhydride solution, in which the peracids are transformed into acetyl benzoyl peroxides thus eliminating peracid—aldehyde interaction, enabled the relative reactivities of the benzoylperoxy radicals to be determined with respect to a series of aldehydes [47], In a mixture of two aldehydes, ther peroxidic radicals react according to the two pairs of competitive reactions... [Pg.112]
