This corresponds to pyro-racemic acid in being the simplest beta-ketone acid possible. While it is known in the free state as an easily decomposed hygroscopic syrup its principal form is as the ethyl ester CH3—CO—CH2—COOC2H5, ethyl aceto acetate. In this form it is prepared and in this form it is used as a synthetic reagent. The ester is a colorless liquid boiling at 181°, with a characteristic fruity odor.

A simple and economical method to obtain VPA consists in heating 2-aceto yethylphosphonic acid diall l esters (allq l = methyl, ethyl) at a temperature around 200 °C, in the presence of an acidic (sulfuric acid, VPA) or basic [4-(dimethylamino)pyridine] catalyst. Allq l acetates are simultaneously distilled off. The remaining mixture is hydrolyzed at 160 °C and the alcohol is simultaneously distilled off. By this procedure is obtained a technical grade crude VPA or ester containing crude VPA , i.e. a mixture containing more then 75% pure VPA and other compounds such as VPA... 

The addition of active methylene compounds (ethyl malonate, ethyl aceto-acetate, ethyl plienylacetate, nitromethane, acrylonitrile, etc.) to the ap-double bond of a conjugated unsaturated ketone, ester or nitrile in the presence of a basic cataljst (s ium ethoxide, piperidine, diethylamiue, etc.) is known as the Michael reaction or Michael addition. The reaction may be illustrated by the addition of ethyl malonate to ethyl fumarate in the presence of sodium ethoxide hydrolysis and decarboxylation of the addendum (ethyl propane-1 1 2 3-tetracarboxylate) yields tricarballylic acid ...

(A., 186, 214 201, 143 213, 143.)—Like malonic ester, acetoacetic ester contains two 1 3-carbonyl groups with a methylene group in position 2. It is only to be expected then that it yields with metallic sodium or sodium alcoholate sodio-derivatives from which mono- and di-, alkyl and aryl homologues can be obtained by treatment with a suitable halide, including halogen esters. Aceto Acetic Ester S3mtheses.— These alkyl and acyl derivatives of ethyl aceto acetate, both the mono- and the di- derivatives, react now on hydrolysis in the two ways given above, i.e.y by Xheketonehydro-lysis or the acid hydrolysis and we may thus obtain a large number of ketones and acids as desired.
