Two observations indicate that aspartate is formed primarily by a transamination reaction, probably from glutamate, rather than by a direct amination with NH4 in A. cylindrica. The sequential labeling of first citrulline and then arginine are consistent with the idea that citrulline is a substrate for the synthesis of arginine. In cyanobacteria, citrulline appears to be formed by the condensation of carbamyl phosphate with ornithine (27).
