Acadia National Park

For years, Mt. Desert Island, particularly its major settlement. Bar Harbor, afforded summer homes for the wealthy. Recently though. Bar Harbor has become a burgeoning arts community as well. But, the best part of the island is the unspoiled forest land known as Acadia National Park. Since the island sits on the boundary line between the temperate and subarctic zones, the island supports the flora and fauna of both zones as well as beach, inland, and alpine plants. It also lies in a major bird migration lane and is a resting spot for many birds. [Pg.177]

The establishment of Acadia National Park in 1916 means that this natural monument will be preserved and that it will be available to all people, not just the wealthy. Visitors to Acadia may receive nature instruction from the park naturalists as well as enjoy camping, hiking, cycling, and boating. Or they may choose to spend time at the archeological museum learning about the Stone Age inhabitants of the island. [Pg.177]

Regional metamorphism, the wide-scale alteration of rocks during major tectonic events, can produce spectacular textures and structures in rocks, including folds of layers of rocks, folds of individual minerals (mica, for example), and rotated garnet crystals. Examples of regional metamorphism abound, from Acadia National Park in Maine and the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern part of the United States, to the Llano Uplift of central Texas, and the Precambrian rocks of the Grand Canyon. The Alps of Europe and the Himalayas of Asia also show effects of regional metamorphism. [Pg.314]

Even before the sale of Burt s Bees, Roxanne Quimby had returned her heart and her money to Maine. It was in her blood, it was where she wanted to live. She found a 1,2 00-square-foot home in the coastal town of Winter Harbor, near Maine s only national park, Acadia, another conservation project that had received vital financing and land from the Rockefeller family. [Pg.201]
