The initial step is to identify which database, from a few thousands worldwide (about 10 000 in 2002), provides the requested information. The next step is to determine which subsection of the topic is of interest, and to identify typical search terms or keywords (synonyms, homonyms, different languages, or abbreviations) (Table 5-1). During the search in a database, this strategy is then executed (money is charged for spending time on some chemical databases). The resulting hits may be further refined by combining keywords or database fields, respectively, with Boolean operators (Table 5-2). The final results should be saved in electronic or printed form. 

The abbreviated table on the next page, which gives critical values of z for both one-tailed and two-tailed tests at various levels of significance, will be found useful for purposes of reference. Critical values of z for other levels of significance are found by the use of Table 2.26b. For a small number of samples we replace z, obtained from above or from Table 2.26b, by t from Table 2.27, and we replace cr by ... 

For each choice of n (the number of points), the w, and the n zeros ( ) of the nth degree Legendre polynomial must be determined by requiring that the approximation be exact for polynomials of degree less than 2n + 1. These have been determined for n = 2 through 95 and an abbreviated table for some n is given in Table 1-16. The interval - 1 < < I is transformed onto the interval a < X < b by calculating for each x, (k = 1,. . ., n)...

We may predict many redox reactions of metals by using an activity series. An activity series lists reactions showing how various metals and hydrogen oxidize in aqueous solution. Elements at the top of the series are more reactive (active) than elements below. A reaction occurs when an element interacts with a cation of an element lower in the series. The more active elements have a stronger tendency to oxidize than the less active elements. The less active elements tend to reduce instead of oxidize. The reduction reactions are the reverse of the oxidation reactions given in the activity series table, Table 4-1. This is an abbreviated table. Refer to your textbook for a more complete table.

Equation (11-2) offers a convenient expression for calculating the diffusion coefficient for various compounds and mixtures, but it should not be used as a substitute for experimental values of the diffusion coefficient when they are available for a particular system. References 3 and 5 to 9 present more information on calculation of diffusion coefficients. An abbreviated table of diffusion coefficients is given in Appendix A. 

IEC and EN Standards ask for marking the type of protection as an abbreviation completed by the classification scheme (temperature class, explosion group) as described in the previous chapter. Table 5.1 gives a survey of the types of explosion protection and their abbreviations. Table 5.2 summarizes the IEC and EN marking code. 

The JCAHO has a major focus on patient safety, including medication safety. As facilities report internal sentinel events to JCAHO, they are reviewed and analyzed. JCAHO has issued a number of sentinel event alerts, notifying healfh care organizafions and consumers to specific safety issues and practice recommendations to improve them. Several have addressed medication issues such as potassium chloride and other concentrated electrolytes, insulin, heparin, injectable opiates and narcotics, infusion pumps, and look- and sound-alike medications and abbreviations.
