A Chlordane

Aspila et al. [338] reported the results of an interlaboratory quality control study in five laboratories on the electron capture gas chromatographic determination of ten chlorinated insecticides in standards and spiked and unspiked seawater samples (lindane, heptachlor, aldrin, 5-chlordane, a-chlordane, dield-rin, endrin, p, p -DDT, methoxychlor, and mirex). The methods of analyses used by these workers were not discussed, although it is mentioned that the methods were quite similar to those described in the water quality Branch Analytical Methods Manual [339]. Both hexane and benzene were used for the initial extraction of the water samples.

Loamy soils treated with heptachlor at 25 pounds per 5-inch acre, over a 5-year period from 1958 through 1962, contained about 5% of the applied dosages in the fall of 1968, primarily in the form of heptachlor epoxide. In addition toy-chlordane and nonachlor, which were present in the original heptachlor formulation, two toxic metabolites (heptachlor epoxide and a-chlordane) and three unidentified compounds were detected, thus indicating the breakdown in soils of heptachlor and related compounds (Lichenstein et al. 1970).

Historically, less attention has been paid to atmospheric deposition to connecting channels and tributary rivers of the Great Lakes, mainly because of the smaller surface areas presented by rivers for direct atmospheric deposition, compared with deposition and transport to rivers from their watersheds. The atmospheric deposition of chlordanes and HCHs to the St. Lawrence River ranged from < 1 kg/yr for a-chlordane to 5 kg/yr for a- and y-HCHs these loadings represented < 1 to 14% of the atmospheric deposition to the watershed [58].
