An inversion mechanism had been previously observed in the hydroxylation of caranine (2) to lycorine by Wildman and Heimer. They observed 7% incorporation of [2/ -3H] caranine into lycorine in Zephyranthes Candida Herb., the 3H being retained at C-2 of 1 as shown by the conversion into the inactive 385. The stereospecifically labeled precursor was obtained through LiAl3H4 reduction of lycorine-1,2-a-epoxide prepared from lycorine via its cis-chlorohydrin and chromatography on Florisil. The structure of the a-epoxide rests on physical and chemical grounds, whereas the stereochemistry of the... [Pg.148]

Nerinine was isolated from Nerine samiensis and shown to possess the empirical formula C19H25NO5 (70). Analysis of the alkaloid showed the presence of three methoxyls and one N-methyl group. Subsequently, nerinine was isolated from Zephyranthes Candida by Boit and Ehmke... [Pg.336]

Zephyranthine (mp 201°-202° [ajj, —43.2° in CHCI3) was isolated from Zephyranthes Candida. It forms a picrate (mp 194°-195°) and a methiodide (mp 294°-295° decomp.). It is stable to catal3dic hydrogenation but forms an 0,0-diacetate and an isopropylidene derivative. The alkaloid is identical with a-dihydro-2-epilycorine (XIV R = OH) (63). [Pg.334]
