Zelkova

The values of Tc thus calculated each for the sawdust heaps of fifteen wood species, including Port Orford cedar, ranged from 118 °C for the sawdust heap of zelkova to 142 °C for that of Sitka spruce. 

Comparison of the DTA curve of the sawdust of the bark made out of a tree of paulownia with that of the sawdust of the wood made out of the same tree, and, the comparison of the same kind regarding a tree of zelkova arc presented in Figs. 95 and 96, respectively. 

At all events, however, it will be reasonable, in practice, to consider a temperature 20 K lower than the value of Tc calculated herein for a sawdust heap, formed into the infinite slab above referred to and placed in the atmosphere under isothermal conditions, as the upper limit temperature for the safe handling of the sawdust. For instance, 100 °C will be the upper limit temperature for the safe handling of the sawdust of zelkova, 105 °C for that of Western red cedar, 110 °C for that of Douglas fir, and so forth.

The lower saturated acids (C4 Cio) occur in milk fats (Section 3.4.1) and in a few seed fats. Cow s milk fat contains butanoic acid (10% mol, 4% wt) as well as smaller amounts of C, Cg, Cio and C12 acids. Sheep s and goat s milk fats contain the same range of acids with decanoic as the most significant (up to 10% mol). Octanoic, decanoic or dodecanoic acids are major components of seed oils from the elm (10 0, 60%), Zelkova serrata (10 0, >70%) and from the Cuphea genus (Section 3.3.12) which contains high levels of octanoic (—70%), decanoic (—85%) or dodecanoic (—60%) in different species.

Water status in living woody plants, Prunus yedoensis Matsuma and Zelkova serrata Makino was observed using an NMR microscope. Propriety of tracers, such as Mn and Cu , was wood species dependent, and successful observations of the water flow in vessels of the trees were determined by the appropriate paramagnetic ion species. These tracers were absolutely necessary to perform the three dimensional and real time reconstruction of the flow in vessels of the trees. Accumulation of the large amount of water in the cambium represented active metabolic activity in it. Swift water flow was observed in the outermost vessels and water transport rate in the inner vessel was more than 10 times slower than that in the outermost ones.
