The phosphorescence lifetimes for the p-aminobenzoic acid anion adsorbed on sodium acetate as a function of temperature were evaluated in a manner similar to the one discussed by Oelkrug and coworkers (,28-30) for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons adsorbed on y-alumina. In general, the solid-surface phosphorescence lifetime cutrves for the anion of p-aminobenzoic acid followed Equation 2.

There is a linear correlation between the stability constants for the 1 1 zirconium complexes with the amino-acids glycine, alanine, P-alanine, lysine, asparagine, m-aminobenzoic acid, y-aminobutyric acid, and the pK values of the acids. Numerous individual substances were detected only in Ru04 extracts e.g. di- to pentachlorinated benzenes, 4-chlorobenzoic acid and 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid 24, hexachlorocyclohexanes (a-,P-,y- and 5-HCH) 22, a technical mixture obtained during the synthesis of lindane, and the plasticizers alkylsulfonic acid phenylesters 23. These plasticizers were recently identified in riverine sediments (Franke et al. 1998). Furthermore, nitro-substituted benzoic acid and alkylated phenols 24 were observed. The occurrence of aromatic nitro compounds as a result of the oxidation of anilines can be excluded due to the contemporary appearance of amino compounds, e.g. 4-aminobenzoic acid or N-ethylaniline. However, the origin as well as the emission pathway of these compounds is still unknown. 

For the synthesis of the AMT ester (VIII.151), bromide (VIII. 156)-HBr was condensed in situ with 4-aminobenzoic acid and the product, 4-amino-4-deoxypteroic acid (APA), was treated directly with a mixture of formic and acetic acid to obtain the W °-formyl derivative (FmAPA, 65% yield) [292]. Condensation of FmAPA with y-r-butyl a-methyl L-glutamate to form the diester (VIII. 155) was accomplished in 82% yield by a modified mixed anhydride procedure involving four cycles of in situ carboxyl group reactivation. Hydrolysis of the methyl ester and W -formyl group at the same time with NaOH proved impossible as a result of an unforeseen loss of the y-t-butyl ester. When the a-methyl ester was first removed under mild conditions with Ba(0H)2, however, the relatively stable V -formyl derivative (VIII.154) was isolated satisfactorily in 79% yield. Subsequent cleavage of the W -formyl group was then accomplished by carefully controlled hydrolysis in 0.25 M NaOH (1.75 h at 25 °C).
