Propantheline Propanetheline, A-methyl-iV-(l-methylethyl)-iV-[2-[(9/f-xanthen-9-ylcarbonyl) oxy]ethyl]-2-propanaminium bromide (14.1.11), is synthesized by reacting xan-then-9-carboxylic acid chloride with 2-di-MO-propylaminoethanol, giving the ester (14.1.10), which upon reaction with methylbromide turns into the quaternary salt, propantheline (14.1.11) [12,13]. 

Xanthone is unreactive towards hydrazine and phenylhydrazine. The oxime is obtained by reaction of xanthione (xanthene-9-thione) with hydroxylamine, or from xanthone and hydroxylamine in pyridine. When the oxime is heated in water with phenylhydrazine, the phenylhydrazone is formed. In acid solution, xanthone reacts normally with 2,4-dinitro-phenylhydrazine but xanthone-1 -carboxylic acid (435) gives the pyridazinone (436), possibly via the hydrazone (57JCS1922). When the oxime is heated with phosphorus pentachloride it undergoes a Beckmann rearrangement to give the amide (437) (70MI22300). 

A range of tetrahydro-9f/-xanthen-9-ones arise from photo-induced C-O bond formation of 2-methoxyaryl 2-chlorocyclohex-l-enyl ketones and related compounds (14CC5254). Some examples of tetrahydro-9ff-xanthen-9-ones were obtained as diastereomeric mixtures of cis- and traws-isomers through a 4-DMAP-mediated tandem addition reaction of l-(2-hydroxyaryl)alkynones bearing an aldehyde function (Scheme 76) (140L1642). A Robinson annulation of a P-keto ester and methyl vinyl ketone mediated by tin(lV) chloride afforded a tetrahydro-9H-xanthen-9-one-l-carboxylic acid-type compound (14JOC10689).
