365 parts of (3-diisopropylaminoethyl chloride and 565 parts of xanthene-9-carboxylic acid dissolved in 800 parts of isopropanol is heated to reflux for 5 hours. The solution is then cooled, diluted with dry ether and the crystalline precipitate of (3-diisopropylaminoethyl xanthene-9-carboxylate hydrochloride is collected on a filter and dried. This salt melts at 111 -112°C. 38 parts of the foregoing salt are dissolved in the minimum of water and treated with an aqueous solution of potassium carbonate. The suspension of (3-diisopropylamino-ethyl xanthene-9-carboxylate thus formed is extracted with ether and the ether extract is dried and evaporated. There is thus obtained 33 parts of the free base which are treated with 10 parts of methyl bromide in 100 parts of chloroform for 22 hours at 70°-80°C.
