Words and Terms

In general, new technical words and terms are defined in the text. Use has also been made of some other words with which the student may not be familiar it may occasionally be necessary for him to find the meaning of one of these words by looking it up in the dictionary. It is ray hope that every student who reads the book will benefit by an increase in his general vocabulary as well as in his scientific vocabulary, and also by an increase in the precision and soundness of his thinking about non-scientific questions as well as about scientific questions. 

The question naturally arises as to how these differences in American and British usage of words and terms may be readily recognized. There is no simple answer to the problem, for Anglo-American dictionaries, as such, do not appear to exist. Perhaps the constant use of indexes from both countries is the best solution. 

We wrote our inaugural triple-bottom-line report to satisfy the needs of the broadest audience possible. Industry jargon was replaced with common words and terms. Section 14.3 contains references to the locations of words and terms in a classic Index of Subjects. This index often provides many page numbers for the same topic. When a word is encountered without specific explanations in the text, the reader can go to the Wordfmder Index, which gives direction to the definition location, to learn about it or refresh his or her memory. 

An example of the foreigrmess of university study that you may encounter immediately is that subjects have their own jargon - words and terms that are used in a specific way in their own context. Even If you look them up in the dictionary, you still won t understand the way they are used in a particuiar subject area because their contextual meanings are specific and unusual. Familiar words are used differently and new terms are invented. Different uses of words indicate different ways of thinking about and viewing...
