Nahsen Explosives. Several commercial expls of the carbonite type were patented in 1899 by Spregnstoffwerke Dr R. Nahsen Co of Hamburg, Ger. One was named Phoenix Powder and contained NG 29.5, K nitrate 32.0, wood meal 38.0 collodion cotton 0.5%... 

Commercial blasting explosives contain ammonium nitrate, wood meal, oil and TNT. A mixture of ammonium nitrate, water and oily fuels produces an emulsion slurry which is also used in commercial blasting explosives. Small glass or plastic spheres containing oxygen can be added to emulsion slurries to increase its sensitivity to detonation. 

Materials. Commercial cotton (Pakistani cotton) cut into 5 mm length and Whatman cellulose powder CF-11 was used as cellulose samples after Soxhlet extraction with alcohol-benzene for 7 h. Wood meal (mainly 40 - 80 mesh) from Makanba (Betula Maximowicziana Regel) was used after washing with cold water. Methyl methacrylate and styrene were purified by the conventional methods. Other reagents used were analytical reagent grade. 

In an alternative way of isolating lignin from wood, pre-extracted spruce wood meal has been treated with a commercial mono-component endoglucanase [27, 41]. Thereby, the crystalline structure of cellulose is destroyed and the now amorphous wood can be homogeneously swollen in aqueous urea. Some commercial NG-based explosives, used by terrorists in Northern Ireland, were analyzed by GC-MS [33], The explosives contained ammonium nitrate, NG, EGDN, a mixture of DNT isomers, NC, and wood meal. The forensic aim of the study was to characterize the different brands (Frangex, Frangex No. 1, Plaster Gelatin, and Opencast Gelignite) according to the ratio among the various DNT isomers.
