Wood, George

The Haida Indian Band Museum (1), in Skide-gate, B.C., is housed in a building constructed totally of milled wood. George Dyson, of loco, B.C., planked the inside of his baidarka, The Mount Fairweather, with 40-ft. Sitka spruce that he milled himself (2). It s incredible to look at, on and off the water (3), And Alfie Collinson, also of Skidegate, B.C., uses milled yellow cedar slabs as the raw material for his sculptures (4). 

In Britain, the manufacture of cordite had commenced in 1889 in the royal gunpowder factory at Waltham Abbey. The acetone, which was critical to the process, was made from the distillate collected from wood that was heated to a high temperature. The best wood for this purpose came from the forests of continental Europe, and it was therefore unavailable to the British after the start of World War i. But in 1915 a chance meeting solved this problem. C.P. Scott of The Manchester Guardian introduced David Lloyd George, the Minister of Munitions, to one Chaim Weizmann. 

Doctors tended to be enthusiastic about the powers of opium and to minimize its negative effects. In 1868, George Wood, a noted medical professor at the University of Pennsylvania and the president of the American Philosophical Society, described opium s pharmacological effects as follows ...

At sunset, we left the car and climbed a peak. There was talk about the mar/els of natural history. Once we had clambered to the top, we decided to claim the peak in the name of Yage. We managed to find wood and propped up a pole. George offered his shirt for a flag. There was a short ceremony.
