Wood consolidation polyester resin

Decorative laminate is defined in ISO 472 but in common usage has come to mean sheet materials consisting of decorative surface papers impregnated with melamine resin and consolidated under heat and pressure with plies of core paper permeated with phenolic resin. In a wider sense the term can be applied to many associated products—including laminates in solid colour laminates with facings such as metal foils, textiles, or wood veneers polyester laminates direct faced boards and composite boards comprising thin laminates bonded to substrates of various kinds. 

In 2000, we have begun our research on this topic paying particular attention to the possibility of finding new chemical systems able to frontally polymerize and new FP applications. Specifically, we have studied polyurethanes (19, 20), polyester tyrene resins (21), polydicylopentadiene (22) and its BPNs with polyacrylates (23), Furthermore, we were able to prepare films (24) and to apply FP to the consolidation of porous materials (i.e. stones, woods, flaxes, papers), in particular -but not only- those having a historical-artistic interest (24), In this chapter we present a brief overview of these recent findings. 

An MF resin, Kauramin CE 5549, was proposed as a consolidant for waterlogged wood and lacquerwork (Hoffmann and Wittkopper, 1999) as a replacement for Arigal C and Lyofix DML (Haas, 1969 Grattan and Clarke, 1987). The pre-polymer is applied as a solution in water. It was cured in solution using an added catalyst and heat. Butylated amino-formaldehyde resins were used as coatings, especially for ceramics (Chinaglaze) (Tennent, 1983). The resin solution is mixed with an acid catalyst before apphcation. Chinaglaze was a UF resin modified by the addition of an alkyd (phthalic acid polyester), which yellows badly. 

Decorative Board n (decorative laminate) A special term for laminates used in the furniture and cabinetry industries, which are defined by the Decorative Board Section of NEMA as ... a product resulting from the impregnation or coating of a decorative web of paper, cloth, or other carrying medium with a thermosetting type of resin and consolidation of one or more of these webs with a cellulosic substrate under heat and pressure of less than 500 pounds per square inch . This includes all boards that were formerly called low-pressure melamine and polyester laminates, but does not include vinyls. Cellulosic here means impregnated paper, wood, or plywood.
