Fibers whiskers

Although not as expensive as whiskers, fibers are considerably more expensive than powders. Extmsion processed AI2O2 and AI2O2—Zr02 fibers cost 100-200/kg. 

Steps, or growth layers, are structure components for construction of a variety of growth forms in the electrodeposition of metals (e.g., columnar crystals, whiskers, fiber textures). We can distinguish between monoatomic steps, polyatomic microsteps, and polyatomic macrosteps. Only the propagation of polyatomic steps can be observed directly, in situ.

A nomenclature for one-dimensional materials has not yet been established. Different and creative names have been presented in the literature, such as nanotubules, whiskers, fibers, fibrils, nanocables, nanocastles, etc. Terms such as nanowires or nanorods were used in the literature for structures with two dimensions not exceeding a few hundreds of nanometers.

Also used are metallic fibers, carbon fibers, graphite, whisker fibers, fibers obtained from titanates having good pigmentating properties, boron fibers (diameter = 0.1-0.12 mm), ceramic fibers, etc. Ceramic... 

Based on these considerations, it is then apparent the beneficial role played by the utilization of efficient consohdation methods like the SPS, where the relatively less severe sintering conditions required, might help to preserve the reinforcing character of the whiskers/fibers in the final dense product.
