The evolution of America s military lands began in the late 18th century and early 19th century when the Army built a series of strategically located forts along the coasts and inner waterways and rivers of the eastern states, as far west as the Mississippi River, to protect against foreign and internal attacks. One example, still an active military installation today, was the fortress built on the Hudson River at West Point, New York, which later became the site for the estabhshment of the U.S. Military Academy in 1802 and is currently the home for 4,400 cadets, staff, faculty and families (Fig. 96.1). [Pg.1684]

To simulate recovery of uranium and thorium from irradiated 6 percent uranium, 94 percent thorium fuel from the first loading of Consolidated Edison Company s Indian Point 1 nuclear power plant, Oak Ridge National Laboratory [R3] made small-scale experiments on application of the acid Thorex process to fuel containing the appropriate amounts of uranium and thorium, with tracer quantities of the principal fission products. Spent uranium-thorium fuel from the Indian Point 1 plant was subsequently processed by Nuclear Fuel Services, Inc., at West Valley, New York, for recovery of uranium, but without separation of thorium from fission products. No account of this separation has been published. [Pg.515]

Five days after Gellman met Garsson and one day after Erie Basin Metal Products, Inc., was certified as a New York corporation. Colonel English, now Chief, Industrial Service, OC CWS, as CWS contracting officer, issued a letter of intent to the new company at 75 West Street, New York, N.Y. This letter was an order for 15,000 4.2-inch chemical mortar shell bodies and 15,000 chemical mortar shell fuzes, "the shell bodies f.o.b. common carrier, Brooklyn, N.Y., or Elgin, 111, the fuzes, f.o.b. common carrier, point of loading and assembly. A provision to manufacture an item at either of two locations was seldom if ever included in government contracts. The present paper is based on the author s study (1) funded by the U. S. Bureau of Mines which, however, is not responsible for the views expressed or the conclusions reached. The time element has been subdivided into three discrete points and a period. The points include current output levels, for use as a base line, 1985 and 1990. The period encompasses the decade from 1990. This reflects the increasing unreliability of the estimates as the projection is extended. Because sulfur markets tend to be discrete and sulfur sources tend to be geographically differentiated regional supply projections are required. The definition chosen here is the Petroleum Administration for Defense districts. [These are defined as I - Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia. II - Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. [Pg.3]

The National Wholesale Druggist Association (NDWA) vehemently objected to such measures since the use of stamps and detailed record keeping would greatly increase the cost of doing business. The NDWA also objected to the inclusion of cannabis on the proscribed list. Dr. Charles West, their spokesman, said that there was no reason to consider cannabis in the same class as opium, morphine, and cocaine, since it was not habit forming. Dr. William Muir, spokesman for the New York Pharmaceutical Association, pointed out that cannabis was a major ingredient in com cures. Having to keep detailed records of every sale of com cures was ridiculous. [Pg.95]
