Waterfall electricity

It seems probable that electrification by friction, the oldest known method of electrifying bodies, is caused by the sudden separation of the two halves of the double layers set up on contact, when the contact is broken. Helmholtz took this view,1 and though there has been some little controversy over it,2 the view still seems the most probable. Ballo-electricity, or waterfall electricity,3 produced when a mass of water breaks up into small drops, is also probably due to the charge produced when double layers form at the surface of drops. It is closely connected with the electrokinetic or potential ( 8). [Pg.302]

Electric current, which is the flow of electrons, is in many ways directly analogous to the flow of water. Think of a river flowing over a waterfall. The volume of water flowing past a point in the river each second is analogous to electrical current, and the height of the waterfall is analogous to a voltage drop. [Pg.33]

Hydroelectric Plant An electric generating plant in which the turbine generators are driven by falling water, typically located at a dam or major waterfall. [Pg.20]

The waterfall which is produced by the action of gravitation is readily convertible into electricity, and that in turn into heat, light and magnetism. [Pg.21]

Ozone may be produced in nature in a variety of ways. When water evaporates into the air, particularly when thrown up in the form of spray, traces of ozone are produced, and this accounts for its presence in the fresh sea breeze and in the neighbourhood of waterfalls.8 The refreshing odour after a shower of ram or the passing of a water-cart over the road is probably due to ozone. The gas is also produced by silent electric discharges from thunder-clouds and accompanies the flash discharge of lightning. In 1886 Wurster 9 called attention to the fact that ozone may result from the action of sunlight upon the clouds, and since then the results of numerous researches have pointed to the fact that the bulk of the atmospheric ozone is yielded by the action of... [Pg.176]

VUbterpoifier Moving water is also an energy source, whether it s a river or a waterfall. Either way, this energy may be captured by a variety of novel mechanical or electrical devices. In turn, these will pump a portion of this water (or water from... [Pg.9]

The natural direction of chemical reactions is much like the natural direction of more familiar changes in everyday life. We aU know that water going over a waterfall is favorable. Likewise, water going back up the waterfall is not favorable. To move water from the bottom of the waterfall back to the top would require energy and work—electricity could drive a mechanical pump that could move the water. [Pg.175]

In case of renewable plants relying on a free energy souree (like sun, wind, waterfall besides salinity gradient), the lowest eost of the electricity is generally obtained in correspondence to die minimum specific plant cost. [Pg.276]

There is a long history of investigations of production of electrically charged droplets by spraying or shattering liquids in impact with surfaces, including early work on electrically charged spray from waterfalls. This work culminated in pubhcation of a comprehensive book on the subject (Loeb 1958) and some of it is summarized in one of the recent reviews of ESI (Hamdan 1991). [Pg.211]

M Figure 20.9 The flow of electrons from the anode to the cathode of a voltaic cell can be likened to the flow of water over a waterfall. Water flows over the waterfall because its potential energy is lower at the bottom of the falls than at the top. Likewise, if there is an electrical connection between the anode and cathode of a voltaic cell, electrons flow from the anode to the cathode in order to lower their potential energy. [Pg.789]
