Argon is two and one half times as soluble in water as nitrogen, having about the same solubility as oxygen. Argon is colorless and odorless, both as a gas and liquid. Argon is considered to be a very inert gas and is not known to form true chemical compounds, as do krypton, xenon, and radon. 

To prevent such release, off gases are treated in Charcoal Delay Systems, which delay the release of xenon and krypton, and other radioactive gases, such as iodine and methyl iodide, until sufficient time has elapsed for the short-Hved radioactivity to decay. The delay time is increased by increasing the mass of adsorbent and by lowering the temperature and humidity for a boiling water reactor (BWR), a typical system containing 211 of activated carbon operated at 255 K, at 500 K dewpoint, and 101 kPa (15 psia) would provide about 42 days holdup for xenon and 1.8 days holdup for krypton (88). Humidity reduction is typically provided by a combination of a cooler-condenser and a molecular sieve adsorbent bed. 

Fluorescent ultraviolet lamps within an apparatus that allows condensation cycles rather than the water spray typical of xenon arc tests have been developed for plastics testing (279). The spectral cutoff wavelength of the lamps used in the apparatus determines the severity of the test. Ultraviolet B (UVB) 313 lamps allow a significant irradiance component below 290 nm, which is normally filtered out by the earth s atmosphere. Ultraviolet A (UVA)... 

In other applications of CT, orally administered barium sulfate or a water-soluble iodinated CM is used to opacify the GI tract. Xenon, atomic number 54, exhibits similar x-ray absorption properties to those of iodine. It rapidly diffuses across the blood brain barrier after inhalation to saturate different tissues of brain as a function of its lipid solubility. In preliminary investigations (99), xenon gas inhalation prior to brain CT has provided useful information for evaluations of local cerebral blood flow and cerebral tissue abnormalities. Xenon exhibits an anesthetic effect at high concentrations but otherwise is free of physiological effects because of its nonreactive nature.
