Recycling of nutrients between coral hosts and symbiotic dinoflageUates (zoox-antheUae) is a key reef process (see Section II above). ZooxantheUae take up the ammonium excreted by the coral animal, therefore this waste N is not released to the wider system (Muscatine and D Elia, 1978 Wilkerson and Trench, 1986). Recycling of N by the coral host could satisfy aU the nitrogen needs of the symbiotic algae (Crossland and Barnes, 1974, 1977). 

The remaining process leaves runoff and residue as the snow melts. Meltwater can be released into neighboring freshwater systems or used for irrigation. In the case of animal waste treatment, the runoff can be stored in a holding pond for recycling as a flushing system for bams. 

A high proportion of the animal waste will have been recycled on to grassland by the grazing animal and we must therefore conclude that, even if an equitable system of distribution of animal wastes was available in this country, there would certainly be insufficient to maintain present yields of arable crop production.
