Was Anything Done

In the Conclusion, Was Anything Done , I offer a concluding reflection surveying the central issues of this study, articulating my own current re-evaluation of the significance of Bond s work. 

Shakespeare s suicide might therefore be read ultimately both as a symptom of terminal social, cultural and political conditions, and as the writer-as-physician belatedly acting to diagnose and remedy his morally terminal disease. Knowing that he has been culpable to its spread, he asks Was anything done (B, p. 57). 

Before proceeding to the Conclusion and posing the question Was anything done , the following section features an interview with Chris Cooper, Artistic Director of Big Brum Theatre in Education company, in June 2012. 

Was anything done is the last line uttered by Shakespeare in Edward Bond s Bingo and seems an appropriate and intriguing title for this short Conclusion. From the same play, shortly after the Old Man has been shot and killed offstage, Shakespeare reflects with a bleakly austere truth ... 

Every writer writes in other men s blood. The trivial and the real. There s nothing else to write in. But only a god or a devil can write in other men s blood and not ask why they spilt it and what it cost [...] Was anything done Was anything done (B, p. 57)... 

Was anything done That question is for us as much as for Bond s Shakespeare and indeed 1 would suggest for Bond himself. There is a shared responsibility for us all to consider - and collectively, imperfectly and with the vulnerability of our humanness - to seek a provisional answer. It is my view that Edward Bond has and continues to develop and express a fiercely illuminating searchlight upon us and our world - and the possibility of us and it having a future. 

Was anything done 1 will leave almost the final words to Bond himself ...

We thought that the deuteron might be expected to leave 1 proton in the molybdenum and thus make technetium, but the problem was to prove that this hypothesis was true. This was done by the tracer technique. We took the molybdenum target, dissolved it, and added many elements as tracers. Then we tried to see whether there was anything to be found which was a chemical cousin of rhenium and manganese, both of which are in the same vertical column as technetium in the Periodic Table.

Now you protest that the startup actually is not in the area that you have worked in, it is a medical device, but it is not similar to the ones you have been working on. Unfortunately, every year you have gone to the internal science fair in which you saw the research projects from all of the groups within this large company. This was not done only to inspire you and to build loyalty and crossfertilization of ideas. It has been admitted in court that these science fairs are also done so that you will be exposed to research in all the areas of the company so that you specifically cannot work with any competitor or start up that has anything to do with any part of your present employer. 

The modem Olympics were devised by men for men in 1896 anything else would have been quite shocking. Nevertheless a woman did, it is claimed, mn unofficially with the 25 male competitors in that first marathon. It was not until the Amsterdam Olympics of 1928 that three track events - the 100 m, 800 m and 4 x 100 m relay - were opened to women, together with the discus and high jump. Ai it turned out, this first women s Olympic 800 m event was to set back the course of women s athletics by many years since some of the participants in that race collapsed. Although the failures probably resulted from inadequate preparation (as they would have done for male athletes) they inevitably received more publicity than the winner, Lina Radke, from Germany. This provided support for the view that women should not be allowed to participate in such events. Indeed the 800 m event for women was not reinstated until the 1960 Olympic Games. 

For any trailblazer, you are thinking about those blacks coming after you. You had to have the strength to deal with the racism and discrimination and still get the job done. I look back and think about that period of my career a lot More than anything, I was extremely focused on succeeding. Failing was not an option. I always had the confidence that I could do the job. ..
