A scries of a-substituted /J-(2-phenylcthcnyl)-/ -hydroxy ketones, e.g., ( )-5-hydroxy-2,2,4-trimethyl-5,7-diphenyl-6-hepten-3-one, has been investigated340. It is possible to find the most stable conformers of the diastereomeric ketones and to differentiate between them by the identification of a long-range W-coupling between the olefinic and the hydroxy proton (emphasized bonds), which can exist only in the u configuration. 

In the presence of coupling between the two excited manifolds, represented by the operator W, the bound states n) generated, for example, either by absorption of a photon (as illustrated in Figure 7.5), by electron impact, or in an atom-molecule collision will decay because they undergo transitions to the continuum states. W is assumed to be time-independent and for the discussion in this section its origin and particular form is not pertinent. It may represent nonadiabatic coupling between two electronic or two vibrational states, for example. We explicitly assume that W couples only the bound and the continuum states and that there is no coupling between the bound or between the continuum states,... 

The 31P NMR chemical shifts of compounds 36-38 are also in line with the expected trends previously reported for S P within group 6 metal carbonyl-phosphine complexes. The 31P NMR spectra of compound 38 also exhibit the tungsten (183W) satellites around the resonance of P-2 and the typical 1J P-W coupling constants for y/digated [W(CO)s]-phosphine complexes.
