More sophisticated methods that actually measure volumetric water content can also be used, such as time domain reflectometry (TDR). In Figure 14, an example of TDR results is presented. Oxidation of methane at millisecond contact times. Much attention is paid to a relatively new field of research of hydrocarbon oxidation, dealing with processes in which reactive gases contact with a catalyst for a very short time, of the order of a few milliseconds (short-time catalysis). One of the pioneers of these studies, L.D. Shmidt, showed benefits of hydrocarbon oxidation on monolithic catalysts (meshes, metal foam blocks, and blocks with through-channels) at short contact times and, therefore, at high volumetric flow rates, which enable to achieve a very high volumetric production capacity of the reactor [155].
