Voltage suppression requirements

There are three specific reasons for the change in voltage suppression requirements (1) The increased effect of induced lightning on solid-state components (also enhanced by a changing world weather pattern). When a capacitor circuit is compensated through a series reaetor. either to suppress the system harmonics or to limit the switching inrush currents (Section 23.11) or both, it will require suitable adjustment in its voltage and capacitive ratings, fhe series reactor will dampen the switching currents but consume an inductively reactive power and offset an equivalent amount of capacitive kVAr. and require compensation. Note In off-line power supplies, for better EMI suppression, we may decide to place Y-caps from the rectified dc rails (either one or both) to earth. So sometimes we place Y-caps from primary ground to secondary ground (usually connected to earth ground), or from the HVDC (high voltage dc) rail to secondary ground.
