Volhard, Jacob. August Wilhelm von Hofmann Ein Lebensbild. Berlin Friedlan-der, 1902. [Pg.366]

Volhard, J. Justus Liebigs Ann. Chem. 1887, 242, 141. Jacob Volhard (1849-1909) was born in Darmstadt, Germany. He apprenticed under Liebig, WiU, Bunsen, Hofmann, Kolbe, and von Baeyer. He improved Hell s original procedure in preparing a-bromo-acid during his research in thiophenes. [Pg.292]

The Volhard method was first described by Jacob Volhard, a German chemist, in 1874. [Pg.360]

The reaction is named for the German chemists Carl Magnus von Hell (1849-1926) and Jacob Volhard (1834-1910) and for the Russian chemist Nicolai (Nikolay Dmitrievich) Zelinsky (1861-1953). [Pg.132]

Jacob Volhard (Darmstadt, 4 June 1834-Halle, 14 January 1910) was assistant to Liebig in Munich, Hofmann in London, and Kolbe in Marburg. He was assistant (1863), and associate professor (1869), in Munich, professor at Erlangen (1882) and Halle. He synthesised sarcosine, and creatinine by a method suggested by Strecker (1861), devised the thiocyanate silver titration, and (with H. Erdmann) synthesised thiophene by heating a mixture of sodium succinate and phosphorus trisulphide. ... [Pg.335]

They must be Emil Erlenmeyer (1825-1909) and Jacob Volhard (1834-1910) (Mendeleev (note 17), 710). After the retirement of Kopp from editorship in March 1871, Erlenmeyer, Volhard, and Liebig were the editors of Annalen (Alan J. Rocke, The Quiet Revolution (Berkeley, Los Angeles, London U. of California Press, 1993), 288). Erlenmeyer was very much a Russophile. [Pg.40]
