When a TV camera is installed on the microscope, a video cassette recorder can be used to make a permanent record of observations. This is especially valuable when the temperature and time are superimposed on the image of the sample allowing review as a function of time and temperature. This can be done a frame at a time if necessary.

A TV video camera in conjunction with a TV monitor and video cassette recorder (Figure 1) has an enormous advantage over the conventional 35 mm photography. Firstly, since an entire experiment can be stored on a TV cassette and thus becomes part of a permanent Phycomyces library, we can rerun any given experiment, many lasting several hours, at any future date. Secondly, the reliability of measurements is enhanced since replicates may be taken and the taped experiment may be stopped or rewound to check results.

We use a video cassette recorder because it is a cheap, lightweight instrument. We convert it to accept analogue A-scan signals of rectified, smoothed format. All processing is carried out on replay of the stored data. 

Together with the particular features noted above, the console contains controls for the camera head lighting (2 x 800W and 2 x 300W) zoom lens controls (focus, iris, and zoom) camera pan and tilt indicators for camera temperature with audible warning of high temperature TV monitor and video switching for interconnection to other camera/vldeo systems and a U-Matic video cassette recorder. 

Why do we put up with the frustrations of everyday objects, with objects that we can t figure out how to use, with those neat plastic-wrapped packages that seem impossible to open, with doors that trap people, with washing machines and dryers that have become too confusing to use, with audio-stereo-television-video-cassette-recorders that claim in their advertisements to do everything, but that make it almost impossible to do anything ...
