Polyaryletherketones (PAEK) are aromatic polymers with ether and ketone linkages in the chain, viz. PEK, PEEK, PEEKK, etc. Polyetheretherketone (Victrex PEEK), [-( )-C0-( )-0-( )-0-]jj, was commercialized in 1980 (Tg = 143°C, T = 334°C). Commercial blends of PEEK include, Sumiploy PEEK/PES/PTFE, PEEK/LCP, Cortem PEEK/ LTG, etc. Evolution of PEEK blends technology is outlined in Table 1.73.

The most common of the polyketones are PEK, PEEK, and PAEK. All are available as thermoplastic molding compounds. PAEK is available as a compression molding compound from Amoco (Kadel). PEEK is available as a compression molding, extrusion and injection molding compound from Victrex, Compound Technologies, DSM Engineering, LNP and RTP. PEK is available as an injection molding compound from RTP. 

In 1993 the ICI Victrex PEEK business was sold to a management buyout and subsequently Victrex pic was floated on the London Stock Exchange as an independent company. Victrex currently has 4250 tonnes capacity and is the leading supplier of PAEK. It produces nucleophilic PEEK, PEK ( PEEK HT ) and, since May 2009, PEKEKK ( Victrex ST ). Sales in 2008 were 2625 tonnes of resin having grown by around 40% in the previous four years. In value terms sales were 141 million with a profit before tax of 55 million.

Victrex Company is the main producer of the PEEK polymer in the market now and its sulfonation is generally performed via sulfonic acid groups (SO3H), which are directly introduced onto the polymer backbones, by modification or by polymerization of sulfonated monomers. Sulfonated PEK, PEEK, PEEKK, and PEEK-WC show interesting behaviors in terms of wettability, water flux, antifouling capacity, low fuel...
