Vibrational Spectroscopy with Neutrons— the Future

There are several themes that run through this book that provide hints to future developments. Worldwide, there are extensive programmes of new neutron source development. Taken together these provide a justification for speculating, with more than the usual degree confidence, on the future of vibrational spectroscopy with neutrons. [Pg.523]

One of the instruments that will surely benefit from the use of such guides is the newly proposed spectrometer VISION (SNS, Oak Ridge, USA) [1]. This is a next-generation low-bandpass instrument. An innovative design coupled with the use of a guide and the higher power of a new source means that the instrument will have the equivalent of 100 times the flux of TOSCA. [Pg.523]

Such a leap forward means that routine samples could be measured in a few minutes. It will be possible to obtain INS spectra from just a single milligram of organic sample - which will enable INS spectroscopy of biological samples to blossom. Incoherent INS spectra of non- [Pg.523]

The MAPS spectrometer at ISIS [2], Fig. 12.1(a), is a third generation instrument that demonstrates the future direction of direct geometry instruments. The principal innovation is the use of large area, position sensitive He detectors ( 3.3.1.1). An area of 16 m. Fig. 12.1(b), of the sample environment tank is covered by 576 detectors that provide ahnost continuous coverage over a large solid angle in the forward scattering direction. [Pg.524]

In the late 1990 s desktop computers became powerful enough to mn ab initio calculations of the isolated molecule in a day or two. The result was that this has become the de facto standard for INS analysis. It provides complete vibrational assignments and allows large molecules ( 60 atoms) to be analysed. What would have been, 10 years ago, a PhD project, with no guarantee of success, can now be accomphshed in a week, with certainty. [Pg.525]
