Vegetable blacks

Rebe,/. vine, esp. grapevine tendril. Reben-russ, m. = Rebenschwarz. -saft, m. juice of the grape, wine, -schwarz, n. vine black, vegetable black, Frankfort black. Reb-huhn, n. partridge, -laus, /. vine louse, phylloxera. 

The principal of these are Soot black, which includes resin black, tar black, lamp black and acetylene black slate black, obtained from bituminous shales lignite black and peat black vegetable blacks, including charcoal black, vine black, pine Hack, etc. animal blacks, the chief of these being bone black and others ivory black, horn black, etc. 

Only rarely are certain quantitative determinations necessary on the ash, such as those of the silica and alumina in mineral blacks, lime, alkalies and phosphates in vegetable blacks and calcium phosphate in animal blacks. 

Vegetable black gives little ash (usually not more than 4—5%). which is pale grey and alkaline and largely soluble in hydrochloric acid its principal constituents are lime, magnesia, potash and phosphoric acid.

Vegetable acid An acid occurlng plants as citric acid an organic acid. Vegetable black A fine variety of lamoblack made by the combusticn of vegetable oils.

Vegetable black n. Originally, a sooty product, obtained by burning v etable oils with restricted air. Most vegetable black today is obtained by burning coal-tar oil.
