Uveitis drug-induced

In 1990 approximately 50 cases of anterior uveitis were reported in the United Kingdom, where metipranolol had been available since 1986. At one hospital the incidence of uveitis in patients using 0.6% metipranolol was 14% (15 of 109). All cases resolved with appropriate management. Drug-induced anterior uveitis has also been reported as a rare event in the United States, but a true causal relationship has not been definitely established.

A 300 mg dose of rifabutin is usually well tolerated. Adverse effects include neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, rash, and gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, flatulence). Myositis (12) and uveitis (13) are rarely observed. The drug-induced lupus-like syndrome has been linked in a few cases with rifampicin and rifabutin. 

Drug-induced uveitis is rare. Antibiotics that have been implicated include rifabutin and sulfonamides. Furthermore, nearly all antibiotics injected intracamer-ally have been reported to produce uveitis (23).

Topical administration of a corticosteroid and a cycloplegic (such as atropine) is suitable as initial treatment. Withdrawal of causative drugs is not always necessary (44).
