Upheaval

Upheaval is the upward pavement displacement, usually occurring locally. Soon, surface cracking is developed in the same area. 

Upheaval is caused by swelling of the subgrade owing to the moisture effect on expansive soils. Sub-zero temperatures and frost-susceptible subgrade material will also cause pavement upheaval owing to expansion of ice formation.

The deciding impulse which introduced biogenesis into scientific discussion came from Russia. After the upheavals of the civil war, that country was the subject of worried observation by the rest of the world. It was assumed that no great scientific achievements would be possible there. Then, in 1924, a book on the material basis of the origin of life on Earth appeared in Red Russia . Its author was Alexandr Ivanovich Oparin (1894-1980) from the Bakh Institute of Biochemistry in Moscow (Oparin, 1924). Basically, the Oparin hypothesis makes the following assumptions ... 

Consider how to plan the changes so as to cause minimal upheaval and at minimal risk (see Pattern 13.2, Reengineering). 

There were other distractions. Although lacking some of the intensity of the Berkeley confrontations, social upheaval was becoming conspicuous at Stanford. At Edgewood, the counterinsurgency operations of the United States in Viet Nam had been a relatively infrequent topic of conversation. Here, it was difficult to maintain my relatively apolitical views in the face of student demonstrations. 

Cf. Hellige 1996. For basic innovations guiding principles seem to be particularly important, in the stages prior to technological lock-in to a path and at times of upheaval prior to imminent technological changes in direction. 

Finally, I thank the Cambridge University Press for their forbearance when the production of this book was delayed excessively by the multiple upheavals accompanying my retirement. 

From a general historical perspective we can characterize Paracelsus and iatrochemistry as a kind of counter-culture of the sixteenth century, a revolt against the rigidity of the University curriculum and its isolation from experience. Similar movements can be found in religion, politics, the arts, and economics, the whole period being characterized by changes and upheaval that we call the Renaissance. 

Security The world is increasingly a dangerous place, and my family must have a secure home far from potential upheaval and unrest. 

The 1960s (or more accurately, the period from about 1963 to the early 1970s) was marked by profound social, political, and culmral upheaval. In addition to social and political reforms (such as the Civil Rights movement), racial unrest and the war in Vietnam, the decade was also marked by a cultural revolution. As the admittedly simplistic phrase would have it, the 1960s was the era of sex, drugs, and rock n roll. ... 

It is too soon to know whether Salvia divinorum will play a role in a new wave of hallucinogen abuse. That this will not be the case is suggested by reports by Siebert and others that the effects of the substance are often unpleasant and users do not seek to repeat the experience. Still it is useful to recall the upheavals that once took place, in order that knowledge of the past may help to prevent the repetition of it. 

Accordingly, insofar as the sleep or wake need was not grossly perturbed by biological or environmental upheaval, sleep and wake amounts would remain stable even though the mix of effector contributions might vary in response to other factors.
