The Model 412 PWR uses several control mechanisms. The first is the control cluster, consisting of a set of 25 hafnium metal rods coimected by a spider and inserted in the vacant spaces of 53 of the fuel assembhes (see Fig. 6). The clusters can be moved up and down, or released to shut down the reactor quickly. The rods are also used to (/) provide positive reactivity for the startup of the reactor from cold conditions, (2) make adjustments in power that fit the load demand on the system, (J) help shape the core power distribution to assure favorable fuel consumption and avoid hot spots on fuel cladding, and (4) compensate for the production and consumption of the strongly neutron-absorbing fission product xenon-135. Other PWRs use an alloy of cadmium, indium, and silver, all strong neutron absorbers, as control material. [Pg.217]

Thixotropy and Other Time Effects. In addition to the nonideal behavior described, many fluids exhibit time-dependent effects. Some fluids increase in viscosity (rheopexy) or decrease in viscosity (thixotropy) with time when sheared at a constant shear rate. These effects can occur in fluids with or without yield values. Rheopexy is a rare phenomenon, but thixotropic fluids are common. Examples of thixotropic materials are starch pastes, gelatin, mayoimaise, drilling muds, and latex paints. The thixotropic effect is shown in Figure 5, where the curves are for a specimen exposed first to increasing and then to decreasing shear rates. Because of the decrease in viscosity with time as weU as shear rate, the up-and-down flow curves do not superimpose. Instead, they form a hysteresis loop, often called a thixotropic loop. Because flow curves for thixotropic or rheopectic Hquids depend on the shear history of the sample, different curves for the same material can be obtained, depending on the experimental procedure. [Pg.168]

Initially, all of the SBR polymer known as GR-S produced during World War II was by the batch process. Later, it was thought that a higher volume of polymer would be needed for the war effort. The answer was found in switching from batchwise to continuous production. This was demonstrated in 1944 at the Houston, Texas, synthetic mbber plant operated by The Goodyear Tire Rubber Company. One line, consisting of 12 reactors, was lined up in a continuous mode, producing GR-S that was mote consistent than the batch-produced polymer (25). In addition to increased productivity, improved operation of the recovery of monomers resulted because of increased (20%) reactor capacity as well as consistent operation instead of up and down, as by batchwise polymerisation. [Pg.497]
