Universal design principles

Assistive devices for persons with disabilities are not designed to fix the person but rather to improve the person s surroundings. Devices that can improve and enhance a person s independence are of great value. A device that helps a person bathe his or her elderly parent is useful. Imagine a product that allows this parent to bathe himself or herself now that is wonderful Whether applying universal design principles to develop a product to satisfy an aging population, an adult to succeed... 

The balance of the team and their involvement will primarily depend on whether the product is targeted for one specific person (denoted here as sole user), a class of persons with specific types of disabilities, or a genei consumer product applying universal design principles to maximize its customer base. The members of the team include Aose drawn from the QFT) customers list, as shown in Table 31.1. The specific backgrounds of the engineering team are left for other sources to detail. This section will focus on the consumer and medical team. 

The resources in Table 31.2, especially ABLEDATA, will help you customize and update Table 31.3 as technology changes. During the evaluation phase, rememter to consider universal design principles in the assessment of all concepts. 

In addition to the universal design principles that follow, Table 31.4 shows a set of principles developed by the Center for Universal Design at North Carolina State University.

Holger Nickisch, a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, with dual degrees in chemical engineering and business, designed the spreadsheet for use with Chapters 16 and 17 of Product and Process Design Principles Synthesis, Analysis, and Evaluation (Seider, Seader, and Lewin, Wiley, 2004). It replaces Version 3.0 of an earlier spreadsheet, entitled HNP.xls.
