Legislation: United Kingdom

It is not feasible to review the growing body of legislation covering environmental control in this short chapter. All that can be done is to give a brief resume of the principal legislation current in the United Kingdom. Legislation and control procedures in other countries are likely to be similar in scope and practice. 

Portugal, South Africa, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. This can cause difficulty when trading with these countries. Although these countries have no codified legislation, they have definite ideas as to what can be used. It is best to consult with the specific agencies in these countries before selling flavors or foods to these countries.

In the United Kingdom, the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) and regulations made under it require occupiers to provide a safe plant and system of work and adequate instruction, training, and supervision. In the European community, occupiers of major hazard sites are required to produce a safety case, which describes how hazards have been assessed and are kept under control. Many other countries have similar legislation, though standards of enforcement vary. 

Legislation and control procedures in the United Kingdom are increasingly being derived from regulations promulgated by the European Union (EU). 

The legislation which sets out, for the United Kingdom, the regulations governing industrial health, safety, welfare, hours of work, reporting of accidents, etc. 

In the United Kingdom, by the time of the adoption of the Directive, the authorities had already introduced legislation for the control of animal experimentation in the form of the Animal and Scientific Procedures Act 1986. Its content and coverage was already relatively comprehensive of the requirements set out under the Directive, and so relatively little needed to be done to bring the UK law in line with the European provisions. 

Since the United Kingdom joined the European Community all EU pharmaceutical regulation and legislation is transposed into the UK national pharmaceutical regulation and legislation. The main markets for concentrated soft drinks developed in the United Kingdom and its former empire. The products became universally known as squashes or cordials and became enshrined as such in UK legislation in the 1960s.
