United Kingdom coverage

An often forgotten source for some patent family information is the CLAIMS database. Although its direct coverage is limited to U.S. patents, it includes limited patent family information up to 1979, for Belgium, Prance, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Some of this information from the pre-1970 era is found in no other on-line database. An earHer discussion of patent family databases has recentiy been updated (18). 

In the United Kingdom, by the time of the adoption of the Directive, the authorities had already introduced legislation for the control of animal experimentation in the form of the Animal and Scientific Procedures Act 1986. Its content and coverage was already relatively comprehensive of the requirements set out under the Directive, and so relatively little needed to be done to bring the UK law in line with the European provisions. 

In an attempt to systematically identify the haplotype blocks and assign their corresponding tag SNPs, the International Haplotype Map (HapMap) Project was established in October 2002. This project is a collaboration of scientists from the United States, Canada, China, Japan, the United Kingdom, and Nigeria. Table 13.2 shows the breakdown of the chromosomes and percent coverage on genome for HapMap participants (http //www.hapmap.org). 

There is limited coverage of professional skills in UK-SPEC compared with the CDIO Syllabus. Although formal training in employment, which used to be widespread in the United Kingdom, is now rare, employers expect graduates to have at least some of the professional skills needed to move directly into positions of responsibility. 

The result above rounded according to these rules would become 10.3 0.9, amore honest statement of what was achieved by the measurement. The recommendation by UKAS, the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (1997), which is consistent with the broader advice in the NPL code, is to quote a 95 % confidence limit (coverage factor 1.96 - often rounded to 2) and to round to two significant figures. Thus, the result above would become 10.3 1.7.
