Where sodium erythorbate is employed, expect the condensate pH to be at least one pH unit lower than with ammonium erythorbate. Sodium erythorbate can be buffered up to pH 4.0 by the addition ofl% DEHA (85% strength product), and this provides some marginal improvement in condensate pH. Where DEHA is added in excess of 1 Wo, the product becomes unstable.

Most of us also know that sometimes employers may not provide the best possible working conditions, but as a new employee you should not expect to be put in harm s way. What I have discussed so far concerns one of the factors that makes continual productiveness difficult for scientists. There are others. The majority of scientists are perpetually tempted away from science—to administration, to positions of power, and to teaching. Many are, of course, primarily paid to administer and teach and their employers expect them to give these activities priority.
