Electrocyclic closure of butadiene units encased within cycloheptane rings has been used to obtain bicyclo[3.2.0]heptene systems (Scheme 5)12. For example, irradiation of eucarvone 21 led to the formation of adduct 22 in 52% yield via a disrotatory ring closure123. This adduct was used as a key intermediate in the synthesis of the pheromone grandisol, 23, which proceeded in 20% overall yield from 22. In their synthesis of a-lumicolchicine. Chapman and coworkers utilized a photochemically initiated four-electron disrotatory photocyclization of colchicine to produce /Murnicolchicine 24a and its /-isomer 24b in a 2 1 ratio12b. These adducts were then converted, in a second photochemical step, to the anti head-to-head dimer a-lumicolchicine 25. [Pg.268]

More evidence for the increased steric strain caused by the voluminous ditelluride unit encased in a ring may be found in the reaction of the derivative of o.o -dithiodiphenyl 88 with chalcogens (84JHC413). Whereas the treatment of 88 with selenium allows the formation of the six-membered heterocycle 89 (although in a very low yield of 4%), the reaction with tellurium results in dibenzotellurophene 90 formed, most probably, through extrusion of tellurium from the cyclic ditelluride similar to 89. [Pg.36]

In 1989, the NDF Company opened a facility in Georgetown, South Carolina to produce low density polyethylene. Manufacturing of the polyethylene is done in two 50-ton reactors that are encased individually within their own 8-story-high process unit. The main raw materials for the manufacturing operations include ethylene, hexane, and hutene. The polymerization is completed in the presence of a catalyst. The hase chemicals for the catalyst are aluminum alkyl and isopentane. The reactor and catalyst preparation areas are on a distributed control system (DCS). In this cell dilute sulphuric acid is employed, and the electrodes, as well as the containing vessel, are constructed of lead.
